THE DAILY TURN · OCTOBER 30, 2026

The golf world,
in one read.

The day’s most useful professional-golf news and tournament notes, with a direct link to the reporting behind every item.

THE BIG PICTURE

Defending champs hold on. One veteran moves on.

Miyu Yamashita and Fifa Laopakdee protected their titles through Friday, Karl Vilips put himself into the PGA Tour’s status race with a career round, and Sergio Garcia became the latest major winner to choose a post-LIV path.

LPGA

Yamashita takes control of her title defense.

Defending champion Miyu Yamashita followed her opening 65 with a 6-under 66 to reach 13 under and take a two-shot lead in Kuala Lumpur.

The chase: First-round leader Pauline Roussin-Bouchard and Julia Lopez Ramirez share second at 11 under. Yamashita won this event in a three-player playoff last year and now has a weekend cushion in her bid to repeat.

PGA TOUR

Vilips closes with four birdies for 62.

Karl Vilips produced a career-low 9-under 62 to lead the VidantaWorld Mexico Open after one round. The 25-year-old Australian finished birdie-birdie-birdie-birdie to move one clear of Kensei Hirata.

Ben Griffin, Marco Penge and Jeffrey Kang opened with 64s. Vilips began the week 141st in the FedExCup Fall standings, so a deep finish would materially change his 2027 status outlook. Round two is underway.

AMATEUR GOLF

Laopakdee grinds through the wind and stays ahead.

Defending champion Fifa Laopakdee shot 1-over 72 in gusting conditions but retained a two-shot lead at 7 under. New Zealand’s Cooper Moore is second at 5 under, with Ryan Xie another shot back.

Only five players broke par Friday. Zack Swanwick posted the day’s low round, a 67, to climb to fourth at 3 under. Sixty-two players made the cut at 13 over.

PLAYER MOVEMENT

Garcia leaves LIV and targets a Ryder Cup return.

Sergio Garcia confirmed he will not join the proposed LIV 2.0 and will return to the DP World Tour in 2027. He also left open the possibility of pursuing a PGA Tour comeback.

The 46-year-old says another European Ryder Cup appearance is a goal. He joins Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell and other prominent players who have chosen to leave LIV during its Chapter 11 restructuring.

HOTELPLANNER TOUR

Torres makes the first move toward promotion.

Joseba Torres opened the Road to Mallorca finale with eight birdies and a 7-under 65, one shot ahead of John Catlin and Julien Sale. The 24-year-old entered the week 23rd in the season standings.

Torres likely needs another finish near his recent Hainan Open runner-up result to secure one of 15 DP World Tour cards. A top-six finish keeps his promotion path open, depending on the players around the cutoff.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

The final playoff cut begins today.

The 54-player Simmons Bank Championship field is on course at Pleasant Valley Country Club. Only the top 36 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings after Sunday will advance to the season finale.

Stewart Cink begins the week first in points, followed by Zach Johnson and defending tournament champion Steven Alker. The no-cut event runs for 54 holes.

THE FOX BANDIT VIEW / ANALYSIS

The weekend is about what the scores unlock.

Yamashita and Laopakdee are trying to defend trophies, but the consequences around them are different. Maybank is a test against an elite international LPGA field. The Asia-Pacific Amateur offers Laopakdee a return to the Masters and The Open, and gives three New Zealanders a chance to produce their country’s best finish in championship history.

Vilips and Torres are chasing access more than headlines. Vilips began Mexico outside the PGA Tour’s top-100 full-status line; Torres entered Mallorca eight places outside the 15-card promotion line. Their opening rounds created opportunity, but neither race will be settled until Sunday.

Garcia’s announcement is more durable than another report about LIV’s internal deadline. He has named his 2027 tour and his goal. LIV still has not publicly produced the roster, final financing and court-approved plan that would convert LIV 2.0 from a proposal into a confirmed league.
