THIS DAY IN GOLF HISTORY / OCTOBER 27
Tiger reaches 82—and two champions shine in Asia

October 27 carries one of golf’s largest numbers: 82. It is also the birthday of an LPGA great, the date of a first PGA Tour win and, in 2024, the finish line for two memorable victories in Asia.

2019
Tiger Woods ties the PGA Tour record with win No. 82
Woods completed a three-shot victory over Hideki Matsuyama at the inaugural ZOZO Championship, shooting 67 in the final round to finish at 19-under 261. The title in Japan was his 82nd PGA Tour victory, tying Sam Snead’s all-time mark. [PGA Tour]
The week began with three straight bogeys. Woods answered with nine birdies in an opening 64, added another 64 in round two and never surrendered the lead on the way to a piece of Tour history.
2024
Nico Echavarria wins the ZOZO Championship
Five years after Woods’ landmark victory, Nico Echavarria finished the same event with a final-round 67 and a birdie on the 72nd hole. His 20-under total secured a one-stroke victory over Max Greyserman and Justin Thomas—and the second PGA Tour title of his career. [PGA Tour]
2024

Ruoning Yin closed with a 65 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club to win the Maybank Championship at 23-under 265. It was her second victory in three LPGA starts, following the Buick LPGA Shanghai earlier that month. [LPGA]

Do not let three holes write the round.
Woods opened the ZOZO Championship with three bogeys and still finished the week with a trophy. The lesson is not that a great round always waits around the corner. It is that the next shot deserves a decision untouched by the last one.
Build a reset you can repeat: step behind the ball, name the target, make one rehearsal and commit. Keep the sequence short enough to use when your pulse is up and the card looks ugly.
Practice it by creating consequences on the range. After every five balls, choose a new club and a new target. Treat the first shot as if it follows a double bogey. The goal is not perfect contact; it is a clean restart.
