THIS DAY IN GOLF HISTORY / OCTOBER 20

The second win that made Tiger’s arrival feel inevitable

On October 20, 1996, Tiger Woods won for the second time in seven starts as a professional. It was less than two months after “Hello, world”—and already the PGA Tour had a new force.

Tiger Woods wins again—this time at Disney

Two weeks after his breakthrough victory in Las Vegas, Woods closed with a 66 to finish 21 under at the Walt Disney World/Oldsmobile Classic. He beat Payne Stewart by one stroke and became the youngest player to earn two PGA Tour victories since Ralph Guldahl in 1932. [source]

The sequence matters. Woods had won the Las Vegas Invitational on October 6, then returned to contention almost immediately. Disney was not simply confirmation that the first trophy was real. It showed how quickly winning could become routine.

2002

Bob Burns turns a prediction into his only PGA Tour title

Bob Burns entered the Disney Golf Classic 58th on the money list and told his caddie he was going to win. A final-round 65 took him to 25 under, one shot ahead of Chris DiMarco. It was Burns’ first victory in his 173rd Tour start—and ultimately his only PGA Tour win. [source] [report]

2003

Four different paths lead to the Hall of Fame

Annika Sörenstam, Nick Price, Hisako “Chako” Higuchi and Leo Diegel were inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The class joined four distinct eras and golfing traditions: Sörenstam’s transformational LPGA career, Price’s three-major peak, Higuchi’s pioneering influence in Japan and Diegel’s back-to-back PGA Championship victories in 1928 and 1929. Sörenstam was the 100th Hall of Fame member. By then she had already become the first woman to shoot 59 in an LPGA event and had tied Mickey Wright’s LPGA record with 11 victories in a season. [source]

2013

Webb Simpson matches the Las Vegas scoring record

Simpson finished at 24-under 260 to win the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin. The total matched the tournament record Ryan Moore had set one year earlier; Simpson won by six strokes. [source]

2019

Justin Thomas claims the CJ Cup for a second time

Thomas shot a closing 67 at Nine Bridges on Jeju Island to finish 20 under, two strokes ahead of Danny Lee. It was his 11th PGA Tour victory and his second CJ Cup title in the tournament’s first three editions. At 26, Thomas had converted eight of 11 career 54-hole leads or co-leads into wins. [source]

What a second good round tells you

Tiger’s second win and Burns’ only win make an interesting pair. A trophy counts the same in the record book, but the evidence around it is different. Woods returned to contention immediately; Burns needed 173 starts to find his breakthrough. Judging either career from one Sunday would miss most of the story.

There is a useful version of that problem in an amateur’s notebook. One strong score can come from better contact, a hot putter or escaping trouble unusually well. The next few rounds help separate a repeatable change from a welcome outlier. Track the source of the improvement: greens reached, penalties avoided and second-putt length tell you more than a score alone.

For the next practice session, choose the skill behind the good round and test it across changing targets. Hit ten approach shots with a full routine, switching targets each time, and record the result. That gives the next round something specific to confirm.
