BUTTERFIELD BERMUDA CHAMPIONSHIP / ROUND ONE
Blanchet sets the pace with 62 in Bermuda

Two eagles put Chandler Blanchet in front at Port Royal. His 9-under 62 left four players one shot behind after Thursday’s opening round.
Blanchet eagled Nos. 17 and 7 and played the three par 5s in five under. That is the number that stands out: he did most of his damage where the course offered a chance to attack. [PGA Tour]
| Position | Player | Round | To par |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chandler Blanchet | 62 | −9 |
| T2 | Ben Kohles | 63 | −8 |
| T2 | Ben Silverman | 63 | −8 |
| T2 | Danny Walker | 63 | −8 |
| T2 | Corey Conners | 63 | −8 |
Ben Kohles supplied the other big scoring burst: 11 birdies, including six straight, on his way to 63. Conners reached the same score without a bogey. [PGA Tour]
How our picks started
Conners gave our pre-tournament top-10 selection an encouraging start. Seamus Power opened with 66, five under and tied for 20th. There is plenty of golf left before either becomes a result. [PGA Tour]
The Friday question
Who can follow a low round with another useful one? One brilliant afternoon creates an opening; it does not settle the tournament. I’ll be watching the par-5 decisions and whether the contenders keep giving themselves birdie chances without chasing shots that are not there.
